The pomegranate originated in Persia and was cultivated in the Mediterranean region for several millennia.
Recently, pomegranates have become one of the most studied superfoods, and for good reason. In preliminary laboratory research and human studies, pomegranates were found to be effective in reducing heart disease risk factors, such as LDL oxidation, macrophage oxidative status, and foam cell formation, all of which lead to hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and cardiovascular disease.
Pomegranates have also been shown to reduce blood pressure, reduce the risk of cold and flu virus and have antibacterial properties.
